Reina Arevalo, LGPC

Licensed Graduate Psychotherapist

Clinically Certified Trauma & Resilience Practitioner

About Me:

I am a bilingual psychotherapist and have been working with children, teens and their families for over 12 years. I am a former college and career director, college advisor/ coach,  and school counselor in the District of Columbia Public School System.  I have worked with a diverse student population whose learning and social functioning levels covered a wide spectrum.  I specialize in working with children, adolescents and their families, who are experiencing anxiety, depression, suicide ideation, academic difficulties, school transitions, LGBTQIA+/gender identity, peer and family relationships, family deportation, family divorce, grief and trauma issues.

I believe in a holistic strength based approach and aspire for a genuine patient therapist relationship where the client and parents are able to grow and communicate effectively. This can only occur through a strong therapeutic relationship, where trust and communication is built between the client and therapist. As a therapist, I seek to empower clients through their life transitions, helping them develop coping strategies that are specifically tailored to the clients needs. We will work together to identify and create treatment plan goals that are SMART, realistic and meaningful to the client. The therapeutic techniques utilized during sessions include: Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Cognitive- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (C-DBT), Person-Centered, Art Therapy, Solution Focused, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, as well as traditional psychotherapy.

I am originally Salvadoran, but grew up in Washington, DC where I received my Bachelor in Arts in Economics with minors in Spanish and Fine Arts from Washington Trinity University (2010), and a Master’s in Education (School Counseling) from Loyola University Maryland (2020). My current affiliations include: The American School Counselor Association, and Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. I am a National Certified Counselor through the National Board Certified Counselors (NBCC) and Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor through the State of Maryland. As a therapist, I believe in providing a respectful and safe space where clients feel seen and heard. I am glad you are taking the first step to seek therapy and look forward to working together to make positive, healthy changes.
